‘Marco’ Selected as Spanish Entry for the Oscars
This morning, the Film Academy announced that ‘Marco’ will officially represent Spain at the 97th edition of the prestigious Academy Awards. Directed by Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi, this feature film becomes the third Basque film, following ‘Loreak’ and ‘The Endless Trench’, to receive this recognition from the Academy members. All three films are creations of the Moriarti group. The duo Garaño and Goenaga were behind ‘Loreak’; Jon Garaño, Jose Mari Goenaga, and Aitor Arregi directed ‘The Endless Trench’; and Arregi along with Garaño, who co-directed all three films, have together helmed the latest success, ‘Marco’.
With this selection, the film continues its promising international journey, having made its world premiere in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival and also participating, from this Friday, in the Perlak section of the San Sebastian Film Festival. Furthermore, it is worth noting that it has been selected for the Official Selection of the British Film Institute.
On 17th January, the American Academy will announce the titles of the five finalists for Best International Feature Film, so that’s when we will know if the Basque entry will walk the red carpet on Sunday, 2nd March, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
‘Marco’ is a production by Irusoin, Moriarti, Atresmedia Cine, and La Verdad Inventada, and it tells the true story of Enric Marco, a deportee who never existed—a man who, for years, maintained an unimaginable lie before the public and even his own family: that he had been a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. The film follows the life of this character, from his beginnings as an anti-Franco activist to his role as president of the Amical de Mauthausen Association. To depict these real events, the film features performances by two renowned and acclaimed actors, Eduard Fernández and Nathalie Poza.
