Call for entries for the CIMASUB 2024 competition is now open

The eagerly awaited competition of the Donostia - San Sebastian International Underwater Film Festival, CIMASUB 2024, has officially kicked off. With a deadline for entries that runs until 15 September 2024, participants can now send in their works to compete in this increasingly prestigious showcase of underwater imagery.

This year's edition promises to be full of surprises and excitement, with prizes exceeding €20,000 in value, including trips, unforgettable experiences, cash prizes and awards in various categories. From documentaries to short music films and photo galleries, CIMASUB 2024 celebrates creativity, environmental awareness and talent in all its forms.

Among the most notable new features of this year's edition are the inclusion of awards for the best short fiction films and the best video reports. In addition, a prize will be awarded for the best ecological awareness photography, giving recognition to the image that best captures the importance of preserving our oceans.

On 21, 22 and 23 November 2024, Donostia - San Sebastian will become the epicentre of passion for underwater life, with screenings at the Teatro Principal, photographic exhibitions throughout the city, the Txikiziklo Submarino for primary school students and enriching activities for all fans of underwater photography and videography.

The organisation of CIMASUB 2024 continues its work to promote the beauty and importance of the oceans, as well as to denounce the dangers facing our oceans, thanks to the great work of the professionals and amateurs participating in the competition. Through this event, the aim is to inspire the public to fall in love with the underwater world and to take action for its conservation.

The feature film '20,000 Species Of Bees' has won the Best Film Award at the Forqué Awards gala on the 16th of December. The BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia film festival will be held in three cinemas in Bilbao: Sala BBK, the Golem cinemas of Azkuna Zentroa and the Euskalduna Palace. The Bilbao director Josu Martínez will present his second work in the Zinemira section of the San Sebastian Festival. ‘Mirande: film bat egiteko zirriborroa’, is a documentary coproduced by La Tentación Producciones and Gastibeltza about the controversial writer Jon Mirande, considered one of the most important poets in Basque literature of the 20th century. “Mirande is said to be a racist. A paedophile. A Nazi. A misogynist. Immoral. Every time he is mentioned, controversies flare up. We don't know what to do about him. I want to make a film about Mirande. But I don't know how. Perhaps the most interesting thing to do would be to let him have his say”. This is how Josu explains the work he will present at this Zinemaldia.

“‘Bizkarsoro’ is a grassroots project, created with the help of more than 200 residents of Baigorri

The feature film 'Bizkarsoro,' directed by Josu Martínez, will also compete in the Zinemira section of the San Sebastián Festival. The story encompasses five true stories based on written and oral testimonies, which take place between 1914 and 1982, in a village that does not exist. Produced by Gastibeltza Filmak, Adabaki Ekoizpenak, and Tentazioa Produkzioak, the work highlights the social changes experienced by a small village during the 20th century. ‘Contadores’ is one of several Basque productions that will be on show at the 71st San Sebastian Film Festival. The short film directed by Irati Gorostidi had its world premiere at the Cannes Critics' Week and will compete in the Zabaltegi Tabakalera section of the Zinemaldia. Produced by Apellaniz & de Sosa, as well as Tractora and Pirenaika, the film is about a trade union negotiation in the 1970s and features a cast made up of amateur actors.

'A Deep Breath’ is the work that will be presented by directors Bertha Gaztelumendi and Rosa Zufía at the Basque Cinema Gala. In the documentary, both directors dive into the films made by female Basque filmmakers of different generations. The film is to be screened today, 26 September, at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and will compete for the Irizar Basque Film Award. As a sign of the understanding between the two, the directors have agreed to take part in a joint question-and-answer session.
