"Every image, a commitment", discover the CIMASUB 2024 trailer

The Donostia-San Sebastian International Underwater Film Series (CIMASUB) enthusiastically presents the official trailer of its 48th edition, offering a preview of what will be a unique film experience that will take the audience to explore the immensity of the ocean and its secrets.

This year, the festival is held under the slogan: "Every image, a commitment. Every look, an opportunity’. This profound and evocative message defines the spirit of CIMASUB 2024, where each audiovisual work and each photograph represents a commitment by its creators to the preservation of the marine world. For photographers and filmmakers, each image is a way to highlight the beauty and vulnerability of ocean ecosystems. And for the public, every glance becomes an opportunity to raise awareness and take action in favour of ocean conservation.

Programme of Activities CIMASUB 2024

Free screenings at the Teatro Principal: From 21 to 23 November at 19:00 h, with free admission until full capacity is reached. Each session will be dedicated to a theme: marine biodiversity, sustainability and conservation, and culture linked to the sea. The last night will conclude with the awards ceremony for the best productions.

Txikiziklo Submarino: From 18 to 22 November at the San Sebastian Aquarium. More than 600 schoolchildren will enjoy educational screenings and talks on biodiversity and ocean conservation.
Photographic exhibitions: During November, exhibitions will be held in the Nautilus Room of the Aquarium, the Garbera Shopping Centre and Kirol Etxea in the Reale Arena, showing the beauty and diversity of underwater life.

The Zero Zabor Uretan (Zero Garbage in the Water) campaign comes to the Basque Coast in July aboard the Ecoactive Museum Ship Mater. The Bilbao director Josu Martínez will present his second work in the Zinemira section of the San Sebastian Festival. ‘Mirande: film bat egiteko zirriborroa’, is a documentary coproduced by La Tentación Producciones and Gastibeltza about the controversial writer Jon Mirande, considered one of the most important poets in Basque literature of the 20th century. “Mirande is said to be a racist. A paedophile. A Nazi. A misogynist. Immoral. Every time he is mentioned, controversies flare up. We don't know what to do about him. I want to make a film about Mirande. But I don't know how. Perhaps the most interesting thing to do would be to let him have his say”. This is how Josu explains the work he will present at this Zinemaldia.

‘Contadores’ is one of several Basque productions that will be on show at the 71st San Sebastian Film Festival. The short film directed by Irati Gorostidi had its world premiere at the Cannes Critics' Week and will compete in the Zabaltegi Tabakalera section of the Zinemaldia. Produced by Apellaniz & de Sosa, as well as Tractora and Pirenaika, the film is about a trade union negotiation in the 1970s and features a cast made up of amateur actors.

'A Deep Breath’ is the work that will be presented by directors Bertha Gaztelumendi and Rosa Zufía at the Basque Cinema Gala. In the documentary, both directors dive into the films made by female Basque filmmakers of different generations. The film is to be screened today, 26 September, at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and will compete for the Irizar Basque Film Award. As a sign of the understanding between the two, the directors have agreed to take part in a joint question-and-answer session.
