“Ibermedia Next has provided us with the resources and the time needed for testing new technologies, exploring innovative techniques and working alongside international teams”
Ibermedia Next is a new modality of the Ibermedia Programme designed to promote innovation and collaboration in the strategic sector of Ibero-American animation. ‘Titan Tofu’, by the director María Luquero and the Basque production company Uniko, was one of the 14 beneficiary projects, which will be co-developed with 10 Latin American countries from Spain, Italy and Portugal. These pieces will tell Ibero-American stories through technological innovation in animation.
‘Titan Tofu’ is one of the 14 Ibermedia Next beneficiary projects, which will have the opportunity to be co-developed together with a Latin American country. How did you receive the news?
I was very impressed. I think this aid is one of the best the sector has benefited from in recent years, and I am very grateful that we have been able to obtain it. There were a great many very high level projects and colleagues, so being short-listed for this aid means that our project has meet some very high standards and criteria. I was in disbelief while also feeling utmost satisfaction at the same time. It is priceless to see all the hard work and perseverance paying off.
What is the core message of ‘Titan Tofu’?
The piece has as its main focus the conscious education of emotional intelligence among boys and girls. In other words, this piece not only talks about emotions, but also aims to teach children how to live the different emotional experiences they will face in their everyday lives. Not only from the point of view of the emotions that we feel at an individual level, but also from those collective ones such as caring, empathy... We aim to do this in a creative manner, where children can identify with the stories, from a more practical stance rather than a great deal of theory.
This project has already participated in prestigious events such as MIFA pitches, Animation Production Days and Cartoon Forum, among others. Could you explain a bit more about your trajectory and what benefits these selections have contributed?
My initial trajectory began as an individual. At the beginning of the project I was selected by different labs and mentoring programmes for creators such as the Next Lab Generation or Cima Impulsa. These selections enriched the project and went a long way in fostering its growth at both narrative and visual levels, and thanks to which I was able to present it to those who are now my producers. From there, we have attended prestigious markets and festivals, for which we are exceedingly grateful. They have greatly increased our visibility and support on an international level, and this has meant that we are currently in talks with potential partners at an impressively high level.
What specific opportunities does Ibermedia Next offer to ‘Titan Tofu’ in terms of resources and support?
Animation processes require a lot of research, trial and error, which are sometimes not considered in productions due to the additional costs they entail, and there is a tendency to use familiar tools that already work. Ibermedia Next has provided us with the resources and the time needed for testing new technologies, exploring innovative techniques and working alongside international teams with the aim of achieving differential results for our future projects. We have also benefited from a large number of personalised and individual consultancies (script, legal, production) which have been very useful for the project.
Ecuador was the Latin American country chosen for the joint development of the project. What do you hope to achieve with this international collaboration?
I am particularly excited about this question. Matte, co-developer of ‘Titan Tofu’, is currently working with us on the production of the pilot episode and I can’t thank them enough for the amazing work they are doing. We are creating a really nice team, where we enrich each other and everything flows effortlessly, so I hope that this collaboration is here to stay and we can make the series together in the future.
What stage is the work currently at?
We are in the middle of production of the pilot episode. We will complete it by the end of this year, thus allowing us to present it to the public at the 2025 Annecy Festival, thanks to Ibermedia Next. On the other hand, we are looking for funding and are in talks with different distributors and television stations for the production of the first 26 episodes.
What are the expectations for the project?
In September we had the presentation of Cartoon Forum. It would be wonderful if we were to obtain financing to be able to launch the first season of the series. In the meantime, I prefer to live day by day and enjoy this special journey we have embarked on. Animation projects take a long time to complete and it is best not to think about the future too much, as this is a long-distance race.
